Software Development - What is a fair hourly rate?

I've spent hours today trying to figure out what other software development companies are charging per hour for development, and I've had no luck. Working for companies I know my skillset has been billed out for as much as $250/hour and as low as $30 an hour.

Does anybody have any idea what US companies are charging today?

This is really a silly post. Companies get all different kinds of hourly rates based on their expertise, reputation, and what kind of actual work they are contracted to do. For example, an expert security consultant might get $325 / hr. A web site developer might only get $65 /hr.

If you are really trying to find out what *you* should charge, then compare yourself with others of similar skills and get some numbers.

Checkout www.realrates.com. It has user-entered (I guess) data for software development rates.
